About
Our Story
Friends of Nantucket Public Schools was founded in the early 1980s by Charron “Corky” Ranney, a mother of five Nantucket public school students. After moving to the island, Corky quickly recognized the need for greater parent involvement and stronger community support for the local schools.
More than 40 years later, our organization remains committed to meeting the evolving needs of students, parents, and teachers.
Today, Nantucket Public Schools serve a diverse student body—60% identify as minority students and 44% come from low-income households. With these realities come unique challenges that we are dedicated to helping address.
At Friends, we believe today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders. Our mission is to enrich every student’s educational journey by fostering family engagement, supporting school initiatives, and building a strong, connected partnership between school and community.

Our Board
The Board of Nantucket Public Schools is governed by an elected board of 15 balanced members representing faculty, parents and staff. Please join us for a meeting. Meetings are held in the High School in room 104B the second Wednesday of the Month at 6PM.
The board is elected at the annual meeting and serves a two-year term.
